Foggy Trees

The dense fog surrounds me this morning like a cloak in the darkness. With the crisp mountain air filling my lungs, a smile comes.

This is heaven on earth for me.

Slowly the pines come out of hiding as the dawn’s first light rises. But alas, the distant slumbering trees stand aloof not ready for the fog to uncover them just yet.

Watching this beautiful scene take place I wonder, “How similar are the ways of the Lord?” When His Light dawns in my heart so many things that surround me come into view. But alas there’s more. Faintly, in the distance, forms lie cloaked, not ready to be seen.

It’s only in due time, as I watch the fog lift that something will come out of hiding – a new enlightenment from the Lord. It’s not my doing but His. He guides my eyes to see that some trees lay under the fog never to be seen, while others peek in and out every so often. But right where I’m at He gives me understanding of the ones I can smell and touch.

Make no mistake beloved, this is not about worshiping trees – it is merely a simple metaphor. God is not a tree, nor does He inhabit trees, but He does make Himself evident through trees that are His creation. “For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, that is, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, being understood by what has been made” (Ro 1:20).

My trees can be anything from discovering a new gem in His Word to helping me deal with a hard situation. Some are sins that He wants to help me eradicate and others are simply knowing the comfort of His presence. My favorites are the strangers He puts my attention on who need a touch, a smile, or friendly word from Him. The trees in my today become a part of my testimony and stand as witnesses to God’s glory.

Onward I move with this certainty – there will always be the Lord’s merciful fog and there are always more trees He is waiting to reveal.
